The World Bank’s Joint Japan/World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program (JJ/WBGSP) offers scholarships to citizens of eligible developing countries to undertake study at universities renowned for their development research and teaching in key development areas.

Since 1987, JJWBGSP has enabled more than 6,000 mid-career professionals from 160 developing countries to complete graduate degrees in development-related fields. On an annual basis, the Government of Japan solely funds the JJWBGSP. You may find more detailed information here.

Collaborating with ANU Crawford School of Public Policy, the World Bank offers the JJ/WBGSP Scholarships to applicants who meet ANU admission requirements and receive unconditional offers to study at Crawford School’s participating programs.

Note: The applications for 2024 are closed and will open in 2025.

Before your application for the JJ/WBGSP starts, you need to meet the following requirements:

  1. Check if you are a national from one of the eligible developing countries and do not hold dual citizenship of a developed country. Visit the World Bank’s website for details: Countries eligible for JJ/WBGSP;

  2. Not be a staff member (which includes consultants) or relative of a staff member of the World Bank Group;

  3. Hold a Bachelor (or equivalent) degree earned at least 3 years prior to Application Deadline date;

  4. Have 3 years or more of recent development-related experience after earning a Bachelor (or equivalent) degree;

  5. You need to check the complete list of eligibility criteria by visiting the World Bank’s Who is Eligible to Apply. All eligibility criteria are strictly adhered to. No exceptions are made.

  6. Meet the ANU admission requirements and receive an unconditional offer from ANU for one of the eligible programs from Crawford School as listed above. For ANU admission, please refer to the section ANU application as below. Contact us for further enquiries.

  7. The link to the World Bank's online JJWBGSP Application Form is only communicated by Crawford School's Participating Programs to the applicants that have been shortlisted.

Key dates and procedures for application

Please understand that JJ/WBGSP scholarship is very competitive and only five (5) slots will be available for 2025 for each participating program.

Important note: Late and incomplete applications will not be considered.

Step1. ANU application from 15 March to 14 April 2024 for 2025 study

To receive an unconditional offer from ANU before your JJ/WBGSP application, you must meet ANU’s admission requirements and submit your application for 2025 from 15 March to 14 April 2024. See further details below regarding how to apply to the ANU.

Before you submit your online application to the World Bank for the JJ/WBGSP, you must have an unconditional offer from ANU for the 2025 academic year.

To apply for the ANU admission, you must submit your application online directly to ANU between 15 March and 14 April 2024 to receive a response before the JJ/WBGSP applications close.

Your ANU application should be submitted at www.programsandcourses.anu.edu.au. Click the ‘Apply’ button on your chosen program’s 2025 academic year webpage and proceed as an international student.

You will need to get the following documents ready for your ANU application:

  1. Colour scanned copies of original transcripts, including the institution grading scale

  2. Colour scanned copy of proof of completion

  3. Current CV

  4. Proof of English language (date of test must be within two years of date of application to ANU https://policies.anu.edu.au/ppl/document/ANUP_000408)

  5. Translation of documents to English. If your previous degree(s) was NOT taught in the English language medium, you must include a certified English translation of your academic transcripts. Original documents that are not in English must be translated by a registered translator who is registered to translate the document language to and from English. You must submit copies of both the original language documents and the English translation. Step 2. Crawford School will shortlist ANU offers and provide the World Bank's application form in early May.

Step 3. Complete application to the World Bank by 24 May 2024 (at noon Washington time)

Shortlisted applicants must submit their complete application as required to the World Bank by 24 May 2024 (at noon Washington time).
