The Master of Environmental Management and Development focuses on theoretical and practical approaches to resource management and development, and how to achieve economic viability, social acceptability and environmental sustainability within differing social and political contexts.

The program caters to a diverse range of participants: from policymakers working in high-level government and non-government organisations across Asia and the Pacific, to policy officers and middle managers in Australian government and industry, and university graduates. 

Career opportunities

When you complete the Master of Environmental Management and Development, a wide range of local and international employment pathways will open. 

Many of our graduates have taken up senior policy roles with local, state, and federal government. Others have gone on to influential positions with global development institutions, environmental agencies, non-government organisations, and social enterprises. Some graduates have chosen to specialise in the private sector, where they are guiding sustainability strategies within large-scale mining and agriculture companies. 

Equipped with the skills and capabilities to respond to the complex challenges of environmental management and sustainable development, you would be able to take up senior policy roles with local, state, and federal government and influential positions with global development institutions, environmental agencies, nongovernment organisations, and social enterprises. You will complete a combination of compulsory and elective courses to tailor their program to meet your professional goals.  

Scholarships

The Crawford School of Public Policy offers the Joint Japan/World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program (JJ/WBGSP). This scholarship is available to citizens of eligible developing countries to undertake study at universities renowned for their development research and teaching in key development areas.

The Australian National University (ANU) offers a wide range of scholarships to students to assist with the cost of their studies.  

Eligibility to apply for ANU scholarships varies depending on the specifics of the scholarship and can be categorised by the type of student you are. Specific scholarship application process information is included in the relevant scholarship listing.

Graduate Certificate of Environmental Management

For those unable to commit to the full 2 year (full-time) program, the Graduate Certificate of Environmental Management is a pathway option for this degree. This 24-unit (6 months, full-time) certificate provides an introduction to the immersive Master's experience, as well as an option for an early exit. 

The Graduate Certificate of Environmental Management is designed for students seeking to start or advance their careers in environmental management and resource resources. 

This program, offered by The Australian National University's (ANU) Crawford School of Public Policy combines the theoretical and practical expertise of leading academics to support you to understand and analyse  current regulatory and policy frameworks along with the ability to contribute to the governance of environmental sustainability and disasters.
