Crawford School professor appointed to the Reserve Bank of Australia’s new monetary board

Distinguished Professor Renee Fry-McKibbin

We are thrilled to announce that Distinguished Professor Renee Fry-McKibbin from the ANU Crawford School of Public Policy has been appointed to the Reserve Bank of Australia’s (RBA) newly restructured monetary board, effective from March 2025.

Distinguished Professor Fry-McKibbin, an economist and academic, will bring her expertise to the RBA’s decision-making process on monetary policy. This appointment is part of a significant reform of the RBA, which is splitting its board into two distinct entities: a monetary board focused on managing interest rates and a governance board overseeing the bank’s operations. This reform marks a historic shift in the RBA’s structure, the most substantial in over three decades.

As RBA Governor Michele Bullock shared in her statement:

“I am looking forward to working with Renee Fry-McKibbin. Her expertise and insights will be vital as we continue our efforts to bring inflation back to target.”

Distinguished Professor Fry-McKibbin will join other distinguished members on the monetary board, including Carolyn Hewson, Ian Harper, Iain Ross, and Alison Watkins. The new governance board will also include high-profile appointments such as former Business Council of Australia CEO Jennifer Westacott and business leader Danny Gilbert.

Professor Fry-McKibbin’s appointment underscores the value of ANU Crawford School’s world-class research and expertise in shaping national economic policy. We are proud to see one of our own contributing to such critical work in shaping the future of Australia’s economy.
