Rebalancing and sustaining growth in China

On 10 July 2012, the China Economy Program within the Crawford School, in collaboration with the Rio Tinto–ANU China Partnership, will present the twelfth China Update. At this annual event, leading academics, policy makers and government representatives discuss the latest research on the Chinese economy. Over the years, the China Update has cemented its status as Australia’s premier forum for in-depth discussion and analysis of the Chinese economy.

This year’s Update will address the following topics:

  • Rebalancing Economic Growth in China: the Significance, Requirements and Impact
  • A View of China in the World: Chinese Trade, Investment and Resource Security
  • China’s Inequality and its Labour Market: A review of Chinese Education, Migration and Demographic Transition

The Update will conclude with a final discussion panel on China’s future challenges and opportunities chaired by Emeritus Professor Peter Drysdale AO and comprised of:

  • Professor Cai Fang, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences
  • Winthrop Professor Peter Robertson, University of Western Australia
  • Dr James Laurenceson, University of Queensland
  • Professor Wing Thye Woo, University of California, Davis
  • Zhao Jianfei, Caixin Media

We are also pleased to announce that the 2012 China Update will be opened by The Hon Dr Craig Emerson MP, Australia’s Minister for Trade, who will speak about the increasing importance and evolving nature of Australia’s relationship with China. This year’s closing address will be given by Professor Selahattin Imrohoroglu, Academic Director, Marshall School of Business, University of Southern California who will speak about the implications of demographic transition on long term growth.

Other eminent speakers at this year’s Update include: Guonan Ma (Bank of International Settlements), Xiaobo Zhang (International Food Policy Research Institute), Huw McKay (Westpac), ZhongXiang Zhang (East-West Centre), Hong Yang (Swiss Federal Institute for Aquatic Science and Technology).

The 2012 China Update will coincide with the launch of Rebalancing and Sustaining Growth in China, edited by Ligang Song and Huw McKay. The book is published by ANU E Press with the Chinese Social Sciences Academic Press publishing the Chinese language version.
