We work on the diverse ways that societies and governments respond to climate change. Our research employs social science methods such as those used in economics, anthropology, and social psychology. Our academics contribute to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and we teach subjects that form part of the Master of Climate Change degree program and other related postgraduate degree programs.

Our group focuses on three core social and policy areas:

  • Mitigation - how greenhouse gas emissions can be reduced effectively and efficiently via a range of policy instruments, including decarbonisation and forest-based carbon sequestration;
  • Adaptation - how societies and communities respond to the impacts of climate change, including how to facilitate change equitably and sustainably; and
  • Energy transitions - the social and economic challenges in moving from fossil fuels to zero carbon energy.
